FOX News Junkie Shot Up “Liberal” Church. Where Was The SPLC? Inquire Within…

While FOX News trawls patriot websites looking for comments placed by trolls and COINTELPRO operatives, perhaps it is time we shine the big bright flashlight of truth onto their war-mongering, hate fueled speech that motivated one of their fans to act out in a horrific act of violence that barely even got a mention out of that vigilant monitor of the radical right, the Southern Poverty Law Center.
On July 27, 2008, Jim D. Adkisson enterred the Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee carrying a guitar case. Over 200 people were watching the musical Annie being performed by a cast of 25 children. Adkisson opened the case, removed a 12 gauge shotgun and began firing. One person was killed at the scene, another died later that night and six others were seriously injured before Adkisson was wrestled to the ground and subdued by church members.
Adkisson was an Army veteran who stated to authorities that he was motivated by a hatred for liberals, Democrats, blacks and gays. According to a sworn affidavit taken by a police officer who interviewed Adkisson later that night:
During the interview Adkisson stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country’s hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of major media outlets. Adkisson made statements that because he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them into office. Adkisson stated that he had held these beliefs for about the last ten years.
Gee, if he’d only waited around for the election of Barrack Obama, he would have seen that the war on terror is alive and well with the full endorsement of the Democrats and every single mainstream media outlet in the country.
Adkisson wrote a four page handwritten “manifesto” which can be found here:
http://web.knoxnews.com/pdf/021009church-manifesto.pdf
In it, he calls the Unitarian Universal Church a “cult” whose members “don’t even believe in God.” He writes “These people aren’t liberals, they’re ultra-liberals. This is a collection of sicko’s, weirdo’s and homo’s. The UU Church is the fountainhead. The veritable wellspring of anti-American organizations like Moveon.org, Code Pink and other un-American groups.”
Adkisson said he planned to go on killing liberals until the police killed him. Among some of his intended targets were all of the Democratic members of the House and Senate as well as every person mentioned in the book 100 people screwing up America by FOX News commentator Bernard Goldberg. When the police searched his person, they found 76 shells of #4 buckshot. A search of his home turned up these three books:
Liberalism is a Mental Disorder by radio talk show host Michael Savage
Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism by Sean Hannity
The O’Reilly Factor: The Good, the Bad and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life by television talk show host Bill O’ReillyIn his manifesto, Adkisson makes it quite clear that the motivation for his war on the liberals was because he felt they were too soft on the “war on terror.” He also was angry because the Supreme Court extended Constitutional rights to GITMO detainees. So his war was actually against those with an anti-war sentiment. He makes a brief mention of gays and blacks, but is is quite clear that that was not his primary motivation. But if you read the mainstream coverage of this tragedy, that is the impression you are left with. And where was the Southern Poverty Law Center whose motto is “Keeping an Eye on the Radical Right”? Apparently that eye was closed when this item showed up in the news. You would think that they would be all over this. They are constantly turning over rocks looking for some evidence of violence carried out by the “Patriot” movement and when they can’t find even one trace, they put out detailed reports about the potential for violence. They make sweeping generalizations and postulate scenarios that don’t even exist. Yet, when a true act of violence by the real radical right comes to the fore, they have little to say about it. It took them over a year to even address the issue. In their Fall 2009 Intelligence report is an article by David Holthouse entitled “Violence Emanates From The Radical Right”. The subject of the Unitarian Universal Church shooting and Adkisson is barely mentioned at all. Three short paragraphs at the end of the article gives sketchy details that are totally misleading. Holthouse goes into great detail about the two Southern youths who fantisized about dressing up in white top hats and tuxedos and going on a black killing spree before assassinating Obama. He describes how the two boys were ultimateley arrested after a friend of theirs turned them in to the Secret Service. He uses that as a segue to address the Knoxville shooting. He writes:
Unfortunately, nothing like that happened to avert a mass killing plot carried out last July by unemployed truck driver Jim David Adkisson, who opened fire in a Unitarian church in Knoxville, Tenn., because, he said, it harbored gays and multiracial families. Armed with a shotgun, Adkisson killed two people and seriously wounded six before being tackled and held for police.
Can you believe it? They come and outright lie right in your face. They claim the motivation was because of gays and multiracial families. No mention of FOX News, no mention of his pro-war sentiment, nothing!
This should tell you a lot! What it tells me is that the SPLC and FOX are allies. There isn’t a dimes bit of difference between the two. The SPLC is not concerned about addressing real violence if its carried out by someone who loves war, loves torture, loves the Patriot Act. No, they are out to get the Patriots who are against war, against torture and…above ALL… against violence!
This certainly is a world turned completely upside down.
