Establishment Grooms “Outsider” Petraeus for Presidential Bid

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
April 4, 2010

Forget the Tea Party. Forget Ron Paul. Forget untried and unknown independents. America needs a strong leader. It needs an outsider.

“Many voters yearn for an outsider, someone with authenticity, integrity and proven accomplishment. Someone who has not spent their life plotting how to ascend the greasy pole, adjusting every utterance for maximum political advantage,” writes Toby Harnden for the Daily Telegraph. “In this toxic climate, perhaps the only public institution that has increased in prestige in recent years is the American military.”

That outsider is General David Petraeus.

Outsider? Petraeus is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. The “outsider” Patraeus attended the Bilderberg meeting held in Greece in 2009.

Foreign Policy magazine, the globalist Carnegie Endowment for International Peace periodical now owned by the CIA’s favorite newspaper, the Washington Post, profiled Petraeus as number eight on its list of “Top 100 Global Thinkers.” The establishment media has turned somersaults to praise him and select him as leader of the year on numerous occasions. The Atlantic Council, an insider organization par excellence — members and associates include Brent Scowcroft, Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, Colin Powell and Zbigniew Brzezinski — has bestowed its Military Leadership Award on Petraeus.

Neocon warmongers love Petraeus. The American Enterprise Institute — one of a handful of neocon think tanks behind the push to invade Iraq and kill a million plus Iraqis — bestowed its 2010 Irving Kristol Award on Petraeus. The late Kristol is considered to be the godfather of the neocon movement.

General David Petraeus is very much an insider.

“He’s a serious guy,” declared the “hawk” (neocon) Rep. Pete King in October. “He’s about the only one out there who could really challenge Obama, who isn’t as strong as he was a few months ago… I think he’s an independent, and I haven’t talked to him about this, but I’d encourage him… I’d be open to it.”

Another “hawk,” Democrat Peter Beinart of the Council on Foreign Relations, has compared Petraeus to Eisenhower, the last general president (who incidentally warned about the influence of the military-industrial complex). The GOP, argues Beinart, will “need someone with enough personal appeal to avoid the culture war food-fights that obsess the Republican base, someone who exudes moral traditionalism and fiscal prudence without appearing fanatical or intolerant.”

In other words, Petraeus will not pander to the “fanatical or intolerant” Tea Party movement, now considered to be the “Republican base,” thanks to the Republican effort to hijack the movement and install disinfo operative Glenn Beck and wind-up doll Sarah Palin as its leaders.

Establishment Republicans and their former Trotskyite neocon fellow travelers are desperate to assign the Tea Party movement with its quaint ideas about the Constitution and small government to the sidelines and thus irrelevancy by 2012.

Petraeus is not a patriot. He was instrumental in the illegal invasion of Iraq. He assumed command of USCENTCOM and is now responsible for U.S. operations in 20 countries from Egypt to Pakistan, including Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Petraeus has thrown his support behind Obama’s “Afghanistan strategy,” that is to say endless war against an enemy created by the CIA and an ever-increasing body count of innocent civilians.

It remains to be seen if the Petraeus trick will swoon growing numbers of people joining the Tea Party movement. If the establishment can sell deep insider General David Petraeus as an “outsider” and independent, they can sell just about anything to the suckers.

Keep in mind that the Republican Tea Party was able to sell Sarah Palin as the ostensible leader of the movement. So confident are they of the loyalty of the suckers, they continued to insist on her viability as a maverick even as she pranced around the stage in designer fashion at a John McCain re-election campaign.

The Coming Dictatorship

Robert Ringer
April 4, 2010

In my article “Saying Yes to the Party of No,” I commented on how pleased I’ve been to see Glenn Beck talking about a subject I’ve been writing about since the late seventies: a government-declared state of emergency leading to a “temporary” dictatorship.

Will Obama purposely foment “civil unrest” rather than wait for something like unemployment or runaway inflation to make it happen?

I have long believed that the mathematics of an insatiable entitlement society in the U.S. guarantees a runaway inflation, which likely would be followed by anarchy and chaos – a perfect excuse for government to resort to strong-armed totalitarian measures to “restore order.” My model has always been Germany’s Weimar Republic in the 1920s, where runaway inflation brought Adolf Hitler to power.

I originally believed that the runaway-inflation scenario in the U.S. would play out in the early 1980s, but a combination of Ronald Reagan and an explosion in computers and electronic technology made possible by the remnants of our capitalist system headed it off.

Nevertheless, the threat of a runaway inflation has continued to increase over the years, even while our false-prosperity economy was booming. That’s because the underlying causes (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, insane union and government-employee wages and benefits, Social Security, Medicare, etc.) of our sick economy have never been addressed.

Unemployment is just a symptom; the disease is entitlements. Throughout the false-prosperity years, Social Security did not go away. It got bigger. Medicare did not go away. It got bigger. Virtually no other benefits went away. They only got bigger. So the underlying problem of entitlements not only has remained, but continued to grow.

The big news now is that Social Security may “go broke” this year instead of in 2017, which was originally projected. Really? And here I thought it’s been broke for decades. Ditto with Medicare. These programs were long ago Madoffized. Almost from the start, government has simply taken in new money from “investors” (read, taxpayers) and handed it over to those on the entitlements side of the fence – with a large chunk of the largesse being skimmed off the top for government employees who administer these programs (and vote for those whom they believe are most likely to safeguard their jobs).

All it took to bring things to a head was a shameful spending spree by a progressive Republican president and a Republican Congress, followed by the ascent of a committed Marxist to the presidency (along with a cooperative majority in Congress).

Now, throw on top of all that a huge new tax-and-spending bill (euphemistically referred to as “health-care legislation”), and the end result seems assured. However, with the government’s power to tax, print, and borrow, no one knows how long it will be before the inevitable runaway inflation sets in.

But if BHO truly has his mind set on establishing a dictatorship – and it is my personal belief that he does – it’s too risky for him to wait for a runaway inflation as an excuse to call a state of emergency. He knows that as long as there is a semblance of a free market in place, producers will continue to push back against the economy-killing effects of his policies.

Thus, he needs another excuse to declare a state of emergency, and over the past year I’ve given a lot of thought to what that excuse might be. In previous articles, I’ve mentioned a nuke exchange between Iran and Israel as one possibility. Another is civil unrest due to unemployment rates that could reach 25 percent or more in the not-too-distant future.

These and others still remain possibilities, but last week Glenn Beck came up with one that may be even more likely. Beck believes that Obama will continue to keep the accelerator pressed to the floor – amnesty for illegal immigrants, a cap-and-trade bill that will eliminate the U.S. as a global business competitor, and more – thus enraging an already angry public to the point of revolution.

A d v e r t i s e m e n t
In other words, purposely foment “civil unrest” rather than wait for something like unemployment or runaway inflation to make it happen. As Beck puts it, just continue to poke people in the eye, then use their predictable and justifiable backlash as an excuse to establish dictatorial powers.

I thought about this issue while attending the recent tea party outside the Capitol Building in Washington. As I crossed Independence Avenue, I noted a somber-looking guard holding a Rambo-style weapon in his hands. I have no idea what it was, but there’s no question in my mind that just one pull of the trigger could have rearranged the body parts of a large number of tea-party people.

The totally peaceful gathering – repeat, totally peaceful – was infested with heavily armed police, but one, in particular, was especially ominous. As the tea partiers chanted “Kill the Bill” on the east side of the Capitol Building, a uniformed, lone figure stood at the top of the steep flight of stairs on the House side of the structure, automatic weapon at the ready, gazing down over the crowd. Sun glasses and all, he reminded me of the “boss man” of Cool Hand Luke’s chain gang.

It gave me the eerie feeling that I was in a banana republic. Had anyone dared to take things beyond mere chanting, there’s no doubt in my mind that it would have become a scene right out of Caracas. All that was missing was Sean Penn.

Yep, I believe Glenn Beck might be on to something. But if the American public refuses to take the bait and doesn’t resort to violence, BHO will have to go to Plan B to have an excuse to declare a state of emergency.

Having said all this, don’t despair. No one, including myself, can predict the future with certainty. In a rapidly changing world, nothing is certain. Which is why I don’t make predictions; I just lay odds. And here’s my odds based on what I know and see today:

• The chances of a declared state of emergency and ensuing dictatorship prior to the 2010 elections: 25%
• The chances of a declared state of emergency and ensuing dictatorship prior to the 2012 elections: 50%
• The chances of the U.S. dollar becoming worthless within three years: 25%
• The chances of the U.S. dollar becoming worthless within ten years: 90%
• The chances of the Republicans cutting back on major entitlements if they regain power in the 2010 elections: Zero
• The chances of the Republicans cutting back on major entitlements if they win the presidency and an overwhelming majority in Congress in 2012: 5%
• The chances of the so-called tea-party people (i.e., everyday Americans who believe in liberty) winning out over the long haul: Hmm … let me procrastinate on that one a bit before I lay odds.

Of course, I could be wrong about all this … but what if I’m right?

They Were Just Following Orders

Laurence M. Vance
LewRockwell.com
April 4, 2010

“And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.”

– Luke 23:33

They didn’t just crucify him; they scourged him, stripped him, put a purple robe on him, put a crown of thorns on his head, mocked him, smote him with their hands, spit on him, cast lots for his garments, smote him on the head, feigned worship to him, and nailed him to a cross.

Crucifixion was an ancient, brutal, gruesome, painful, humiliating, and public method of execution. The “him” referenced above who was crucified is, of course, Jesus Christ. He was crucified even though he was declared to be without fault, not worthy of death, and a just person.

Who in the world would do such a thing? Who would nail the Son of God to a cross and crucify him?

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. (John 19:23)

Of all the horrible things that soldiers have done throughout history, this is certainly the most reprehensible.

Oh, but they were just following orders.

Apologists for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, most people who are indifferent to these wars, and even many of those who oppose them all generally agree on one thing: We should never condemn the soldiers; they are just following orders.

I have often been chastised, even by those who condemn the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, denounce the abuses of the U.S. government, and oppose an interventionist U.S. foreign policy, because I have criticized the institution of the military and the soldiers who mete out death and destruction on its behalf:

Soldiers, I am told:

• Are trained to kill people and break things
• Are required to follow the orders of their officers
• Must never question the orders they are given|
• Must follow orders to maintain discipline and effectiveness

I agree completely.

The problem here is two fold: These things are true and the people who recite them the most don’t actually believe them.

It is because these things are true of soldiers that no American should enlist in the military and fight for what Will Grigg calls “the world’s most powerful terrorist syndicate, the United States Government.” When someone joins the military of a country like the United States with such an interventionist foreign policy and an empire of troops and bases that encircles the globe, he will be expected to not only uphold and maintain the policy and the empire, but carry it out and expand it by military force. When someone works for the policeman, fireman, bully, busybody, and social worker of the world – the U.S. military – he will be expected to participate in acts of military intervention.

A d v e r t i s e m e n t
But, some will reply in retreat, there are some things that soldiers shouldn’t do when ordered to do them by their superiors – like commit war crimes.

My point exactly.

But if that is so then soldiers would not be doing what they are trained to do, would not be following the orders of their superiors, would not be never questioning the orders they are given, and would not be maintaining discipline and effectiveness.

You can’t have it both ways.

And what are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan anyway but crimes against not only the Iraqi and Afghan peoples, but also the thousands of U.S. soldiers who gave their lives in vain and for a lie.

In spite of the blame game that is played when it comes to soldiers being culpable for their actions, they are responsible and will have to answer to a higher power than their commanding officers. That higher power may be their religion, philosophy, moral code, or conscience, but unless they have made a god out of the military, it will be something.

Christ forgave those who crucified him; millions of Koreans, Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians, Iraqis, and Afghans killed by the U.S. military are not only not so forgiving, they never even had the chance.

Will Feds Use Letter Sent by Sovereign Citizen Group to Stage False Flag?

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
April 3, 2010

Following sensational news stories claiming the Guardians of the free Republics threatened state governors around the country in letters demanding they leave office or be removed, the FBI has today warned police around the country that the letters “could provoke violence,” according to the Associated Press.

Investigators do not consider the letters threatening or see threats of violence in the Guardians of the free Republics message. However, according to the Associated Press, the FBI believes the organization’s call for removal of top state officials in its Restore America Plan may lead others to act out violently.

“While there does not appear to be a credible or immediate threat of violence attached to the letters, we’re working with state and local authorities to continue to assess the matter,” said FBI Special Agent Joseph Dickey of Las Vegas. The letters are from a “sovereign citizen extremist group” and that those groups “reject all forms of government authority,” said Dickey. He said those groups don’t believe they have to pay taxes or obey federal, state or local laws.

“As of Wednesday, more than 30 governors had received letters saying if they don’t leave office within three days they will be removed, according to an internal intelligence note by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security,” the Associated Press reports.

An individual identifying himself as D. Merlin Campbell contacted the Nevada Appeal earlier in the week and denied that the Restore America Plan intends to use violence to accomplish its objectives. According to Mr. Campbell, the letter received by the governor of Nevada and other state officials around the county

is actually a Declaration from a lawful Grand Jury of 26 people in each state which is endeavoring to re-establish the true Republic in a peaceful and lawful manner. It does not represent a “threat” from an “extremist” (as is commonly associated with “terrorist” in the media today) group but instead it is a real, legally binding document which is presented by a Grand Jury of regular people which declares that the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller and treasurer all must have lawful oaths of office in order operate in their respective positions. The bonds which they all operate under have been effectively seized and noticed to be null and void. The package includes the following; Declaration, Warrants, Orders to the Governors, General orders to the military. It is not a threat, it is a truth that must be complied with or there will be consequences, not of violence, but legal recourse.

A comment posted on the Appeal’s website describes the Guardians of the free Republics plan as “a bold achievable strategy for behind-the-scenes peaceful reconstruction of the de jure institutions of government without controversy, violence or civil war.”

Is it possible the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security will exploit the Restore America Plan in order to stage a false flag event that will be subsequently blamed on the patriot movement?

It is now almost certain the FBI set-up the Hutaree group in Michigan by inserting agents provocateurs who encouraged violence. The corporate media then orchestrated a hysterical campaign designed to insinuate that the Tea Party movement shares the Hutaree’s anti-government philosophy. The sensationalized raid in Michigan followed a week of corporate media propaganda claiming racist Tea Party activists had assaulted Democrats in Washington as they prepared to vote for the Obamacare bill in Congress.

As Infowars.com and others have demonstrated, the accusations had absolutely no basis in fact. The effort was part of a larger campaign designed to portray the patriot movement as extremist and potentially violent. For months now, CNN, MSNBC, and the corporate media at large – taking their talking points from the SPLC and the ADL — have argued that opposition to Obama and the unconstitutional expansion of the federal government represents the ascension of a dangerous white supremacist and militia movement in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security under the leadership of both Bush and Obama set the stage for the current hysterical campaign with its now notorious report on “rightwing extremism.” Missouri and Virginia contributed to the effort in separate reports characterizing Ron Paul supporters and other patriots as potentially dangerous domestic terrorists.

In addition, it appears the government plans to use anarchists to disrupt Tea Party demonstrations on April 15. Agents provocateurs masquerading as anarchists have disrupted peaceful anti-war and anti-globalist demonstrations in the past (most notably in Ottawa where they were exposed as police infiltrators and rabble-rousers). The pattern is now familiar – anarchists engage in minor property damage and other theatrical acts and this provides riot police with an excuse to brutally attack peaceful demonstrators. It is uncertain if this tactic will work with the Tea Party demonstrations.

It also remains to be seen if an “extremist” group under the control of government agents provocateurs will exploit the Guardians of the free Republics letter in order to engage in violence. A red alert, however, should be issued and members of the patriot movement need to be on the outlook for suspicious activity within their ranks.

It is certain, however, that the government is looking for the right situation in order to crack down on the patriot movement. The establishment is infamous for staging fake terror and criminal events as a pretext to take drastic action against those who oppose their plans.

Finally, Obama publicly named two of his more prominent enemies on CBS today. This is highly unusual. Presidents never mention their foes by name as this has a tendency to lend credence to them. Not even Nixon named his enemies in public. Obama’s comments may mean nothing. On the other hand, he may have issued a warning to those who oppose him. It is interesting to note he mentioned Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, who are in essence shills for the establishment. The breach of etiquette, however, should be taken as a warning to those Obama does not name but are generally associated with the patriot movement and often linked to Beck and Limbaugh, however erroneously, by the corporate media

FOX News Junkie Shot Up “Liberal” Church. Where Was The SPLC? Inquire Within…

Keith Johnson
Revolt of the Plebs
April 3, 2010

While FOX News trawls patriot websites looking for comments placed by trolls and COINTELPRO operatives, perhaps it is time we shine the big bright flashlight of truth onto their war-mongering, hate fueled speech that motivated one of their fans to act out in a horrific act of violence that barely even got a mention out of that vigilant monitor of the radical right, the Southern Poverty Law Center.

On July 27, 2008, Jim D. Adkisson enterred the Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee carrying a guitar case. Over 200 people were watching the musical Annie being performed by a cast of 25 children. Adkisson opened the case, removed a 12 gauge shotgun and began firing. One person was killed at the scene, another died later that night and six others were seriously injured before Adkisson was wrestled to the ground and subdued by church members.

Adkisson was an Army veteran who stated to authorities that he was motivated by a hatred for liberals, Democrats, blacks and gays. According to a sworn affidavit taken by a police officer who interviewed Adkisson later that night:

During the interview Adkisson stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country’s hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of major media outlets. Adkisson made statements that because he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them into office. Adkisson stated that he had held these beliefs for about the last ten years.

Gee, if he’d only waited around for the election of Barrack Obama, he would have seen that the war on terror is alive and well with the full endorsement of the Democrats and every single mainstream media outlet in the country.

Adkisson wrote a four page handwritten “manifesto” which can be found here:

http://web.knoxnews.com/pdf/021009church-manifesto.pdf

In it, he calls the Unitarian Universal Church a “cult” whose members “don’t even believe in God.” He writes “These people aren’t liberals, they’re ultra-liberals. This is a collection of sicko’s, weirdo’s and homo’s. The UU Church is the fountainhead. The veritable wellspring of anti-American organizations like Moveon.org, Code Pink and other un-American groups.”

Adkisson said he planned to go on killing liberals until the police killed him. Among some of his intended targets were all of the Democratic members of the House and Senate as well as every person mentioned in the book 100 people screwing up America by FOX News commentator Bernard Goldberg. When the police searched his person, they found 76 shells of #4 buckshot. A search of his home turned up these three books:

Liberalism is a Mental Disorder by radio talk show host Michael Savage
Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism by Sean Hannity
The O’Reilly Factor: The Good, the Bad and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life by television talk show host Bill O’ReillyIn his manifesto, Adkisson makes it quite clear that the motivation for his war on the liberals was because he felt they were too soft on the “war on terror.” He also was angry because the Supreme Court extended Constitutional rights to GITMO detainees. So his war was actually against those with an anti-war sentiment. He makes a brief mention of gays and blacks, but is is quite clear that that was not his primary motivation. But if you read the mainstream coverage of this tragedy, that is the impression you are left with. And where was the Southern Poverty Law Center whose motto is “Keeping an Eye on the Radical Right”? Apparently that eye was closed when this item showed up in the news. You would think that they would be all over this. They are constantly turning over rocks looking for some evidence of violence carried out by the “Patriot” movement and when they can’t find even one trace, they put out detailed reports about the potential for violence. They make sweeping generalizations and postulate scenarios that don’t even exist. Yet, when a true act of violence by the real radical right comes to the fore, they have little to say about it. It took them over a year to even address the issue. In their Fall 2009 Intelligence report is an article by David Holthouse entitled “Violence Emanates From The Radical Right”. The subject of the Unitarian Universal Church shooting and Adkisson is barely mentioned at all. Three short paragraphs at the end of the article gives sketchy details that are totally misleading. Holthouse goes into great detail about the two Southern youths who fantisized about dressing up in white top hats and tuxedos and going on a black killing spree before assassinating Obama. He describes how the two boys were ultimateley arrested after a friend of theirs turned them in to the Secret Service. He uses that as a segue to address the Knoxville shooting. He writes:
Unfortunately, nothing like that happened to avert a mass killing plot carried out last July by unemployed truck driver Jim David Adkisson, who opened fire in a Unitarian church in Knoxville, Tenn., because, he said, it harbored gays and multiracial families. Armed with a shotgun, Adkisson killed two people and seriously wounded six before being tackled and held for police.

Can you believe it? They come and outright lie right in your face. They claim the motivation was because of gays and multiracial families. No mention of FOX News, no mention of his pro-war sentiment, nothing!

This should tell you a lot! What it tells me is that the SPLC and FOX are allies. There isn’t a dimes bit of difference between the two. The SPLC is not concerned about addressing real violence if its carried out by someone who loves war, loves torture, loves the Patriot Act. No, they are out to get the Patriots who are against war, against torture and…above ALL… against violence!

This certainly is a world turned completely upside down.

Extremist group demands governors resign, FBI says

Comment: According to federal authorities and the media, peacefully attempting to influence government and restore tjhe constitution by writing letters is now considered “extremist”. This is a frightening step up the ladder in terms of the campaign to demonize any political activism as dangerous fringe behavior.

CNN
April 3, 2010

A domestic extremist group has sent letters to more than 30 U.S. governors demanding they resign, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI said in an intelligence note.

The note, dated Monday, said the letters told the governors to vacate their posts within three days.

The FBI and DHS said there do not appear to be credible or immediate threats of violence attached to the letters.

The group behind the letters has a “Restore America Plan” that calls for the removal of any governor who fails to comply, the intelligence note said.

While DHS has no information that the removal refers to a specific plan for violence, “law enforcement should be aware that this could be interpreted as a justification for violence or other criminal actions,” the note said.

Nullifying Federal Tyranny

Clyde Wilson
LewRockwell.com
April 3, 2010

“Resolved, That the several States composing the United States of America, are not united on the principle of unlimited submission to their General Government . . . . and that whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force. . . . that the government created by this compact [the Constitution for the United States] was not made the exclusive or final judge of the extent of the powers delegated to itself; since that would have made its discretion, and not the Constitution, the measure of its powers; . . . . that this would be to surrender the form of government we have chosen, and live under one deriving its powers from its own will, and not from our authority; . . . and that the co-States, recurring to their natural right in cases not made federal, will concur in declaring these acts void, and of no force, and will each take measures of its own for providing that neither these acts, nor any others of the General Government not plainly and intentionally authorised by the Constitution, shall be exercised within their respective territories.”

So wrote Thomas Jefferson, Vice President of the United States, in a document drafted at the request of members of the Kentucky legislature in 1798. Kentucky passed Jefferson’s paper and broadcast it to the world as the definitive opinion and stand of the sovereign people of the State. The language drafted by James Madison for similar documents adopted by the Virginia legislature in 1799 and 1800 was similarly unequivoical in its constitutional position and forceful in expression.

The people, acting through their natural polities, the States, had created and given authority to the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution conferred powers on a general government to handle certain specified matters that were common to the “general welfare” of all the States. That government was an agent. It could not be the judge of its own powers. To allow it to be so would mean nothing less than a government of unlimited power, a tyranny. The partners to the Constitution, the sovereign peoples of the States, were the final judges of what they had intended the Constitution to mean. When the general government exceeded its power it was the right and duty of the State to interpose its authority and defend its people from federal acts of tyranny – yes, to render a federal law inoperative in the State’s jurisdiction…

The scholars of the rising leftist Establishment who took over American history writing beginning in the 1930s invented a self-flattering fable to render the Kentucky and Virginia documents themselves null and void. Jefferson and Madison, they said, really did not care about States’ rights. They were merely anticipating the great tradition of the American Civil Liberties Union in opposing the Alien and Sedition Acts. Their concern was to defend the freedom of speech of the non-conformist radicals of their time.

This established interpretation is a lie and requires a good deal of either ignorance, self-deception, or deliberate falsehood to peddle. It is true that the Virginia and Kentucky acts were not followed up by active resistance to the feds. They did not have to be, because Jefferson and his friends won the following elections, got rid of the bad laws, and compensated those who had been harmed by them. There is evidence that Virginia and North Carolina were quite willing and able to call out the militia if necessary and that grand juries were standing by to indict any offending feds.

Not interested in State rights? Jefferson reiterated the centrality of State rights to the preservation of liberty and self-government in his inaugural address (and in hundreds of letters for the rest of his life). His party and the succeeding Democratic party proclaimed “The Principles of 1798″ repeatedly as their foundational philosophy, right up to the War to Prevent Southern Independence. It could not be clearer: in the American government system State rights and liberty could not be separated. They were the same thing. They had the same defenders and the same enemies. The Sedition Act was not just an invasion of individual rights, it was an illegal invasion of a sphere that the people had left to their States.

Further, the Sedition Act, punishing criticism of federal officials with jail sentences and fines, had been passed in stark defiance of the recently adopted First and Tenth Amendments which absolutely forbade Congress to pass any law abridging the freedom of speech and press and reserved to the States all powers not specifically conferred on the government. How then could Congress pass such a law as the Sedition Act? Because the Federalists, Hamilton and Adams and their supporters, justified their legislation by invoking the Common Law’s provisions about the punishment of “sedition.” The Common Law existed in each State to the extent that State had found it worthwhile to adopt it, but it had no place in a written document of delegated powers such as the Constitution for the United States. If the feds could ignore specified power limitations by grafting Common Law jurisdiction into the Constitution, then literally everything under the sun could be brought under their power. Not only that, but everything under the sun could be ultimately disposed of by the federal courts, which would become the new sovereign. This had to be stopped.

Interposition by Virginia and Kentucky was intended to halt the Northeastern elite’s relentless agenda to become the economic and moral overseers of all Americans through the federal machine. This has always been the engine for the unconstitutional usurpation of federal power – then, since, and now. When State interposition next came into serious play in the United States, the occasion was the tariff laws, by which the Northeastern elite had perverted a constitutional power to raise a revenue into a means of excluding foreign competition and creating a captive market for their profit.

A d v e r t i s e m e n t
After their service as presidents, Jefferson and Madison lived by their republican ethics – they were private citizens with no special right to interfere in public affairs. But they expressed opinions on issues of the day privately to those who asked and who they trusted. When, less than a generation after the “Principles of 1798″ had been proclaimed, the possible nullification of the tariff laws by South Carolina drew attention, Jefferson was gone from the scene. Madison, in contradiction of his own plain language and the circumstances of 1798–1800, claimed that state interposition was not what they had had in mind at that time. Historians who want to trash States’ rights and the South Carolina resistance to the tariff during 1828–1833 lean heavily on Madison’s somewhat vague statements. Self-evidently, Madison contradicted himself, as he did quite often throughout his career. Unlike Jefferson, he was a superficial and inconsistent thinker who often swung from one side to the other. (That is why his pretentious speculations in The Federalist, which, by his own admission, have absolutely no constitutional authority whatsoever, are the favourite text of third string “constitutional lawyers” and would-be “political philosophers.”)

We do not have to wonder what Jefferson in his post-presidential years thought about State interposition. It is not in the least a mystery, although it is something of a secret since “scholars” have assiduously avoided exposure of the relevant documents, which are not easy to find. In 1825, the day after his last Christmas in this earthly realm, Jefferson wrote to William Branch Giles, former Senator from Virginia and stalwart Jeffersonian. He shared Giles’s concerns about the state of federal affairs. “I see, as you do, and with the deepest affliction, the rapid strides with which the federal branch of the government is advancing towards the usurpation of all the rights reserved to the States, and the consolidation in itself of all powers, foreign and domestic; and that, too, by constructions which, if legitimate, leave no limits to their powers.”

The minority President John Quincy Adams was pushing a large program of federal expenditures and expanded powers. Adams and his Congressional allies, Jefferson said, for an example, had construed the delegated power to establish post roads into a power to cut down mountains and dig canals. The old, evil program of the Northeastern “monarchists” to enrich themselves off the earnings of the agriculturalists was once again in the saddle. Reason and argument were no good in such a situation. “You might as well reason and argue with the marble columns” in the Capitol.

The South might well be forced into a choice between “the dissolution of the Union with them, or submission to a government without limitation of powers. Between these two evils, when we must make a choice, there can be no hesitation.” However, not yet. “But in the meanwhile, the States should be watchful to note every material usurpation on their rights; to denounce them as they occur in the most peremptory terms, to protest them as wrongs to which our present submission shall be considered, not as acknowledgments . . . .”

Jefferson mentioned that he had written a letter to Giles on Christmas about important matters, of which Giles “will be free to make use what you please.” I have not found this letter, but it may have something to do with a document Jefferson wrote out on December 24, which he titled “The Solemn Declaration and Protest of the Citizens of Virginia on the Principles of the Constitution of the United States of America and the Violation of Them.” It seems to have been intended for the use of Jefferson’s neighbours in the grand jury of Albemarle County to begin a program for Virginia once more to interpose, against Congress’s usurpation in its “internal improvements” expenditures.

Just three years after Jefferson wrote this, another Vice-President of the United States, at the request of his State, drafted a “South Carolina Exposition,” which described the illegality and injustice of the protective tariff and the proper remedy for it: State interposition upon “The Principles of 1798.” This “Exposition” was approved and broadcast to the world by the legislature of South Carolina, along with a “Protest.” The usual clamour of rent-seekers and petty political operators was raised, claiming, among other things, that Jefferson had not written the Kentucky Resolutions. In 1831 Jefferson’s son-in-law produced the draft in the great man’s own hand.

[There was so much demagoguery broadcast by the opponents of nullification and the shoddy historians who repeat their propaganda, that it is worth saying something about the roles of Jefferson and Calhoun as drafters of the Kentucky Resolutions and the South Carolina Exposition. Jefferson, as we have noted, did not publicly acknowledge his authorship. Calhoun's authorship of the Exposition was characterised as an evil, secretive political operation. This propaganda is designed by and for people who can think only in terms of politicians and parties instead of principles and are ignorant of the ethics of republican virtue that influenced many Americans before Lincoln. Authorship was not acknowledged because it was desired that the statements be understood as the voice of the people of the State, not mischaracterised as merely the position of a national politician.]

In a later generation, another minority president seemingly destroyed forever the constitutional role of the States by declaring the open, democratic, deliberative acts of fourteen States to be only “combinations” of criminals who refused to obey him. Lincoln made that stick by a brutal war of conquest that did not “preserve the Union” but changed the Union into a central state with no limits to its power. Those who hope to revive a constitutional role for the States as counters to the present U.S. Empire, must hope to make the States once more into self-conscious, viable polities who have the political will to enact nullification and stand by it.
